Clinical Aromatherapy is a healing and preventive therapy that harnesses the therapeutic potential of essential oils to relax, rejuvenate, balance, restore, revitalize and revive the mind, body and spirit. It is awakening the body to heal itself by indirect stimulation of the immune system. Thus aromatherapy on its own or by fusion with allopathy enhances healing and develops a sense of well-being in the patient thereby providing the best of both worlds.
Essential Oils are plant extracts taken from the various parts of the plant body like its leaves, flowers, seeds, bark/stem, roots, etc. Thus essential oils are nature in its most powerful form. Along with their antibacterial and antiviral properties, many essential oils also help eliminate stress, increase energy, enhance memory and stimulate natural healing. There may be as many as 200 - 800 different chemical constituents in an oil. The right blend of essential oils could help change life and improve overall well-being.
Essential oils enter the body through the olfactory membranes or the skin. Fragrance molecules bind to receptor cells and send electrical impulses to the brain's limbic system — which controls heart rate, memory, breathing, and emotions. This creates profound physiological and psychological effects, promoting relaxation and healing.
Plants share a great history of useful co-existence with mankind. Plants and plant extracts have been used in various forms since time immemorial to enhance beauty and lifestyle, and most importantly, for their medicinal values. Civilisations dating back to the Egypt, Greece, India, China and Persia have left behind evidences of the extensive use of plants in different areas like medicine, religion, cosmetics, embalming of mummies, etc.
Scientists, doctors and clinical practitioners have all contributed to the growth of modern aromatherapy. After Rene-Maurice Gattefosse discovered that pure lavender oils healed the burns on his arm, he shared his studies of the lavender oil
with his colleague and friend, Jean Valnet, a medical doctor in Paris. Later in China during World War II, Dr. Valnet was amazed that essential oils can stop infection of wounds. Two of Dr. Valnet's students, Dr. Paul Belaiche and Dr. Jean Claude Lapraz discovered antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties in essential oils. Another student of Dr. Valnet, Daniel1 Penoel became an internationally recognized clinical aromatherapist.
Professor Otto Wallach's work on alicyclic compounds (found in essential oils) won him the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1910. His research and discoveries on the properties of alicyclic compounds have contributed immensely to the science of aromatherapy. In 2004, Dr. Richard Axel and Dr. Linda B. Buck were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology/ Medicine for their discoveries of odorant receptors and the organisation of the olfactory system. Their discoveries have proved once again, the healing methodology that forms the base of aromatherapy.

Essential oils work their way into the body either through the Olfactory Membranes or through the skin. Each fragrance molecule attaches itself to specific receptor cells at the nerve endings. The molecules absorbed, generate electrical impulses that are transmitted to the limbic system of the brain. The limbic system is directly connected to areas in the brain that control vital life signs like heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, memory, stress levels, hormone balance, etc. This enables these impulses to be transmitted to the various parts of the body depending on their type and function. This results in profound physiological and psychological effects like mental and physical relaxation
She has been a CAM practitioner with hospitals in London and is currently practicing in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. She formulates different essential oil blends to suit individualised healing needs. Essential oil blends from Suvasa Aromaceuticals are formulated by Dr. Rao.
Environmental fragrancing is the ambient transformation by scent/fragrances, of personal, work and public spaces. It is about modifying the aromatic terrain in which we live/work. The benefits of environmental fragrancing include better memory, organisation, cooperation, high self-set goals, greater job satisfaction and anticipation of higher outcomes in negotiations and also a willingness to be flexible.
WHO claims that 30% of new sealed / remodeled buildings have indoor air quality problems. A sealed environment is that which is kept closed for reasons of effective heating / air-conditioning, for example, offices, bedrooms, etc. These sealed spaces lead to toxic emissions which are released from synthetic textiles, carpets, paints, wall papers, solvents, adhesives, machinery, copiers, blue prints, etc. The US Environment Protection Agency has reported that the levels of pollutants inside can be as much as 100 fold greater than outdoors. The sealed environment also supports growth of hazardous microbes which are re-circulated in the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) systems. This combination of toxic air and microbes cause what is known as Sick Building Syndrome. The common symptoms of SBS are headache, decrease in performance and concentration, fatigue, lethargy, allergies, flu-like fevers, asthma, throat irritations, eye soreness, dry itchy skin, nausea, dizziness and even legionnaires disease in extreme cases. Though improved ventilation can solve the problem, this is also not always a possibility. However, environmental fragrances can be used effectively to deodourise and disinfect any indoor environment with high positive effect.
Pets harbour a lot of micro-organisms in their body and deposit it them in the living area as they pass through. These pose an additional health hazard in the form of infections, and make it necessary to curb the growth of these microbes. Though chemical disinfectants do contain the spread of microbes, it can be harmful for the pet. Household disinfectants and sanitisers have been known to cause rashes on the pet's underside. Suvasa's nature-based Deodourising Disinfectant Liquid Concentrate can be used effectively since it is a broad spectrum hospital grade cleaner and has been proved to be effective on a variety of bacteria, viruses & other microorganisms and doubles up as a deodouriser.
